With the calibre of high profile events holding consecutively in Rivers State and the constant influx of top brass of the highest echelon and finest pedigree of Nigeria’s political, business and traditional class, since the emergence of Nyesom Ezenwo Wike as Governor of the State on May 29, 2015, in spite of calculated efforts by a few disgruntled, ill-intentioned and sadistic dissidents in the State, congregating as opposition politicians and poised to demarket our beloved Rivers State at the slightest opportunity, one cannot but commend the Rivers State Governor as the Captain, Defender, Chief Marketer and Engineer of our New Rivers State for his relentless efforts in projecting the State for what it is, a safe haven for business and pleasure within the West African Sub-region.
His upgrade of critical infrastructure has not gone unnoticed. It is part of a deliberate effort to scale up and redefine the Rivers experience to be at par with other thriving destination brands within Africa and around the world.
While some may view his aggressive infrastructural development of Rivers State as being material for political expedience, given the combative and unpredictable turf of Nigeria’s politics, the vast majority of citizens both within and outside Rivers State cannot but acknowledge the rebounding effects of his strides in attracting businesses to Rivers State and creatively altering the wrong perception of Rivers State and her people renowned for our unique hospitality but maliciously debased by reprobate minds from within the State, whose souls are lost to mischief and greed, for their own selfish interests. The recent construction of Next Mall by a private investor in the State speaks for itself and it is refreshing to know that it would be the largest in West Africa. Nothing boosts investors confidence in a place than the confidence of existing investors and thriving investments in the place.
By leaps and bounds, the topography of the State has dramatically changed since May 2015, altering its look and feel for the best and unleashing a fresh inspiration to the populace to promote and uphold the best of Rivers State. If this is not what good leadership is about, then we may have to redefine what it is.
According to renowned leadership expert, John C. Maxwell, a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike fits into this mould. He has been unpretentious about his intentions for Rivers State. He is deliberately recreating and rejuvenating the State for the best. He is inspiring Rivers people to stand for and defend the best of Rivers State. He is not just talking the talk, he is walking the walk, leading the way from the Frontline as our people follow from behind. It is instructive to note, that of all his many achievements, his ability to unite the political class beyond partisan lines, and stabilize Rivers politics, is something that cannot be taken for granted, given the sad experiences of Rivers people of times past.
Of course there’s a lot still ahead for Governor Wike to offer our people, but the truth is we must begin to count our blessings and name them one after each as a constant reminder of how far away God has taken us through Governor Wike from the path of perdition where we would have been surrendered and sacrificed as a political trophy of modern day colonial conquest.
